Conquered RPG's: 20 Years of Virtuality

The following is a compilation of every RPG that I’ve ever finished in completion, which took me approximately 20 years to finish. While this is not an attempt to brag or exude a prideful demeanor, it does show that I have experience with gaming. In part this list is meant to show just how much gaming I accomplished, but also to establish my credibility with you all so that you realize I’m discussing a topic that I know quite intimately. Many of you will recognize a number of these titles, while some of them may be unfamiliar to you. As a side note, some of these games are more categorized as “Action RPG’s,” but all of them were more or less RPG’s as we define them. Without further garrulousness then, have at it!!

Total Games Played

-90 games played over 20 years at an average of 60 hours (World of Warcraft was more like 400 hours) a piece equals about 5,750 hours of game play. This does not include game research, strategizing with Word and Excel documents, or time spent reading game guides or manuals when needed.

-To put this into perspective, if I was to have played these 5,750 hours straight without stopping, it would equate to 239.6 days of continual game play at 24 hours/day without a break. I figure that we could add in another 300 hours worth of strategizing and planning on top of this figure (a very liberal estimate at that), thus bringing our figure up to about 252 days.

Hi, I'm wondering whether an online flying game which is interactive, where you are flying "missions" & bombing "enemies", with a "team" of other players, would have the same addictive influence as these rpg's?
On his days off work, my 40-year old husband spends every free moment on an online computer game like this. He only comes out to eat. Thanks for your response.

Well, I think that anything can become addictive if it's not done in moderation. The whole issue with addiction is that you have to look at the personality of the person in question. Do they have an addictive personality? Do they tend to do things in excess? Since all addictions are the result of habituation (e.g. habit-forming behaviors that lead to addiction over time), I think that you need to ensure communication with your husband on how his playing makes you feel (good or bad) to ensure that this is out in the open. Anyway, let me know if you have any other questions and I'll be glad to provide any advice that I can.

Thanks so much for responding and Happy New Year to you!
I would say that my husband has an obsessive personality. I guess that I do, too, although I'm a bit older than he and definitely recognize my proclivities, so I work hard to control them.
Anyhow... whatever happens to be his interest of the moment is that into which he pours all of his attention and devotion.
At one time, that object was me... and caused me to feel... well... like an object. It was very uncomfortable for me, like being in a fishbowl. I'd say that we are both loners, but I tend to reach out alot more than he.

But what really creeps me out about this game is that he treats it like a real job, as though it's truly become a part of his identity. He'll come out of his cave once in a great while with a big grin and give me a kiss, maybe a 30 second shoulder rub, and remark, "I may be out there doing battle, but I don't forget my woman at home." sheesh. Honestly, I think he's only half kidding.
He has no real connection with our real world.. friends, family (he is my childrens' step-dad)... but if he hears some excitement out here in the rest of the house, he might step out (with a cheesy grin) to ask what we're talking about. And you know... I feel kinda like a mom would with a newborn, when she does all the cleaning, tending, nurturing, diaper-changing, and here comes "Dad" for a rare, brief visit with his "I'll toss the baby up in the air and we'll have a grand old time" before he retreats back into his own little world. Ack. It's like he only wants to cash in on the fun stuff without putting in the time, effort, commitment during the dull, tedious stretches.
O boy. Thanks for letting me vent.

I know that you're right about my needing to ensure communication.
In a way it's been kinda a relief for him to have his little hobby, but it also makes me angry that he thinks he can just leave the whole business of keeping a home in my hands while he "checks out" mentally and emotionally at every opportunity.
Talking about this is at least helping me to see how I even feel about it, which is something I've not examined beyond the anger.
The thing is, if he weren't doing this, I really don't know what he'd be doing. Before this, he was pretty much zoned out in front of the tv every free moment. The key with him seems to be zoning out, whereas with me, all that tv and gaming would make me feel brain dead. I combat that by writing and reading alot and communicating with people online and in person... while he seems to be in constant hiding mode. Maybe it's just a basic personality difference, but also, before my time,he did do years of psychedelic drugs which I'm thinking now have fried portions of his brain and stunted his emotional growth. What a mess.
Thanks again for listening.
